Vertigo Releasing has announced that the wacky and beloved world of Looney Tunes will be returning to UK cinemas in The Day the Earth Blew Up.

Porky Pig and Daffy Duck, one of the greatest comedic duos in history, are making their hilarious return to the big screen in the sci-fi comedy adventure.

From Warner Bros. Animation, director Pete Browngardt, and the creative team behind the award-winning Looney Tunes cartoons, Looney Tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up stars Porky Pig and Daffy Duck as unlikely heroes and Earth’s only hope when facing the threat of alien invasion. The movie unfolds a rich Porky & Daffy story that fans have never seen before: In this buddy-comedy of epic proportions, our heroes race to save the world, delivering all the laugh-out-loud gags and vibrant visuals that have made the Looney Tunes so iconic, but on a scope and scale yet to be experienced.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the shortlist of  15 animated short films advancing toward nomination consideration for the upcoming 98th Academy Awards®. Among the selected titles are two short films produced by Czech studio Maurfilm: the animated documentary I Died in Irpin by Anastasiia Falileieva and Hurikán by Jan Saska.

Both films represent different approaches to contemporary auteur animation: Hurikán is a deep-fried Prague romance driven by distinctive humor, while I Died in Irpin is an autobiographical testimony of a toxic intimate relationship set against the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine.

We secretly hoped that at least one film out of the 113 qualified titles might make it onto the shortlist. But achieving such a double was something we never dared to dream of. I congratulate all the filmmakers and thank the funds, co-producers, and partners for their support. You don’t get Christmases like this every year…,

Martin Vandas, Producer of Maurfilm

When I learned that my film had been shortlisted, it brought me a spark of hope that I had been deeply missing recently. This is not about triumph. It is about realizing that my very personal story of survival is now becoming part of a vital global conversation. And I am eternally grateful that the Academy is not turning away from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Anastasiia Falileieva, Director

Jan Saska is a man of (moving) images and usually speaks very little. The shortlisting of Hurikán, as recognition of his work and that of a broad team from several European countries, means a great deal to him and he sums it up simply: ‘Super!’ The nine years that have passed since the shortlist of our previous film Happy End show that working on short films does not take a short time, but it is worth it.

Kamila Dohnalová, Producer

Hurikán © MAUR film

I Died in Irpin was produced by Alena Vandasová and Martin Vandas (Maurfilm, CZ), Juraj Krasnohorský (Artichoke, SK) and Anastasiia Falileieva (Plastic Bag Studio, UA), financially supported by Czech and Slovak Audiovisual Funds. The world premiere happened at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival and earned its first Oscar-qualifying awards at Bucheon International Animation Festival (BIAF) in October 2024 followed by five more Oscar-qualifying prizes at Clermont-Ferrand ISFF, Cinanima IAFF, Fest Anča IAFF, Manchester AF, and Animateka IAFF.

Hurikán was produced by Czech producers Kamila Dohnalová (Last Films), Martin Vandas and Alena Vandasová (Maurfilm), in coproduction with Antoine Liétout and Ivan Zuber (Laïdak Films, France), Juraj Krasnohorský (Artichoke, Slovakia), and Mladen Đukić (AEON Production, Bosnia and Herzegovina) with support from national and regional funding bodies across all co-producing countries. The world premiere took place at the Annecy IAFF in 2024, where the film won the Audience Award, and consistently received enthusiastic audience responses during its festival run. It was screened at more than 150 international film festivals, including Clermont-Ferrand ISFF, Sundance, SXSW, and HollyShorts Film Festival, where it received an Oscar-qualifying prize for Best Animated Film. The public can watch Hurikán on the MIYU Distribution Vimeo channel.

Following the announcement, all shortlisted films are available to stream on the Academy Screening Room for all Academy members for viewing. Nominations for the 5 Oscar® animated short films will be announced on live broadcast the 22nd of January 2026.

The industry programme includes; inspiring creative talks, workshops, the exhibition (including recruitment fair, demos, information stands, software and hardware vendors marketplace and more), the Business@MOVE strand of sessions, our portfolio reviews and 1:1 meetings (giving attendees the opportunity to meet commissioners, creative agencies, funders and industry experts), competitions and much more.

And returning also is our live pitching showcase, The Big MOVE Pitch, which gives shortlisted creatives the opportunity to pitch their show concept live, on stage in front of industry experts and the opportunity to win £1,000 to take their project to the next stage and more.

Cartoon Network today announced the greenlight of season 3 and 4 of its hit animated comedy series, The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball, for international audiences. The new order includes 40 episodes continuing the wildly imaginative adventures and visual creativity that have captivated fans worldwide and made the series a standout success.

Produced by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, the series builds on the dynamic legacy of The Amazing World of Gumball with its signature blend of eclectic media styles, including 2D and 3D animation, CGI, puppetry, photorealism, and live action. Created and executive produced by Ben Bocquelet, the quarter-hour episodes deliver sharp meta-humour and a vibrant visual style that has become a hallmark of the franchise.

Since its launch, The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball has delivered strong performance across Cartoon Network’s international channels and engaged fans on digital platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, and Roblox. The series continues to connect with children and families around the world, reinforcing its position as one of the most innovative cartoons in kids’ entertainment.

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball has proven completely irresistible to families and fans across the globe, making it the easiest of decisions to say an emphatic yes to this new season. I am thrilled to continue to work with Ben, Sarah and the hugely talented Gumball team on bringing more Wonderful Weirdness to our Cartoon Network audiences internationally.

Vanessa Brookman, GM, International Kids, Animation and Franchise

Gumball has been a massive success for the studio and it’s been so gratifying to see fans enthusiastically welcome these characters back to their screens. Ben Bocquelet, Erik Fountain, Matt Layzell, and the incredibly creative team were instrumental to its success, and I’m excited we get to deliver even more wonderful weirdness. Thankfully, this time fans won’t have to wait seven years.

Sarah Fell, SVP & Studio Head, Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe

Building on the legacy of The Amazing World of Gumball – famed for its humorous depictions of the imperfect realities of growing up where the ordinary becomes extraordinary – The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball continues the tradition of sharp wit and inventive storytelling. With its self-referential and meta-comedic roots, fans can look forward to more misadventures featuring the wonderfully dysfunctional Watterson family and the quirky classmates of Elmore Junior High, and the eccentric residents of Elmore.

Originally launched in 2011, the franchise began when creator Ben Bocquelet transformed a collection of rejected commercial characters into one of the most beloved animated series of all time. Several characters from Elmore are inspired by Bocquelet’s own family!

Magic Light Pictures have shared an exclusive “first look” trailer for this year’s BBC One and BBC iPlayer Christmas Day animation, The Scarecrows’ Wedding.

From multi-Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning producers Magic Light Pictures, The Scarecrows’ Wedding is the latest festive adaptation of a Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler classic following in the footsteps of The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, Stick Man, Zog, and last year’s Tiddler.

This year’s film tells the enchanting story of two devoted scarecrows, Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay, who dream of the perfect wedding. But when Harry sets off to fetch one last thing for the big day, a smooth-talking rival, Reginald Rake, swoops in with plans of his own leading to unexpected mischief, danger and a race against time.

The half-hour animated special features an all-star cast including Jessie Buckley (Wicked Little Letters, Wild Rose) as Betty O’Barley, Domhnall Gleeson (About Time, The Paper) as Harry O’Hay, and returning favourite Rob Brydon (Gavin & Stacey, The Trip) as Reginald Rake, all led by Sophie Okonedo (Slow Horses, Hotel Rwanda) as the Narrator.

Netflix has released the first look at its upcoming 2026 animated feature Steps, offering a glimpse into a reimagined fairytale world where Cinderella’s stepsisters finally take centre stage. The debut still gives audiences an early look at the film’s distinctive visual style and its twist on the classic tale.

STEPS – (Pictured) Lilith (voice by Ali Wong). ©2025 Netflix, Inc.

Alongside the image, Netflix confirmed that Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu will lead the voice cast as sisters Lilith and Margot—characters who are far less villainous than their storybook reputations suggest. Directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, Steps follows Lilith as she teams up with Cinderella (and a surprisingly dreamy troll) to restore their fractured fairytale and prove that even so-called villains deserve their own happily-ever-after.

This story is, at its core, about two very different sisters—one who fits perfectly into this fairytale kingdom and one who doesn’t—realizing they’re more alike than different. It’s such a personal story for me because, growing up as an awkward, artsy Taiwanese kid in suburban New Jersey, I often felt like an outsider, like “happily ever after” wasn’t meant for me. I wanted to create a film for everyone who has ever felt like they didn’t belong—and show how a single act of kindness can change everything.

Alyce Tzue, Director

When I was introduced to Steps, I saw that it contained incredible artistry, beautiful storytelling, and most of all, that it had something important to say to the world. It’s like nothing else I’ve worked on in my 30 year career in animation. Steps also has an incredible first-time filmmaker in Alyce Tzue, who brings a totally unique voice and point of view. She’s championed this story about belonging that I’ve found to be both resonant and inspirational, and I feel privileged to be by her side on this journey.

John Ripa, Director

Steps is part of Netflix’s original slate of animated features which includes the most popular Netflix film ever, KPop Demon Hunters; Academy Award®-winner Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the Academy Award®-nominated films Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Nimona, The Sea Beast, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, Over the Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon and Klaus; the BAFTA®-nominated Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget; the comedy fan favourites Leo and Back to the Outback; and recently released In Your Dreams.

Sphere Media, one of Canada’s foremost producers and distributors of television and film, has entered into a multi-partner co-production on a new 2D animated series for TVOkids, RADIO-CANADA, TFO and Knowledge Kids in Canada.

By Bunny (Sphere Media)

By Bunny (52 x 6 mins), aimed at 4 to 7-years-olds, rolled into production this month led by Sphere Animation in collaboration with Irish film and TV studio Telegael who will be leading the voice record and post-production and two Indian animation specialists Mesmor Studios and Anaganaga Pictures in charge of storyboard and animation. Pre-production and scriptwriting started in September in Canada, with full delivery expected at the end of 2027. The international launch of By Bunny will be led by ZDF Studios, which will manage distribution across Europe and position the series within its global portfolio of premium kids and family brands. Bejuba! Entertainment will represent the series in the rest of the world except Canada, India and Ireland.

Created by Canadian children’s book author Judith Henderson and Head Writer Anne-Marie Perrotta, By Bunny is a joyful mix of literacy, humour and zoology. Using animal facts as the springboard into storytelling, the series is hosted by red sweater-wearing, floppy-eared Bunny, who uses his wild imagination to discover new exciting worlds that he explores and enjoys. Bunny’s superpower is taking a scientific fact and morphing it into a full-blown story that engages and entertains while inspiring kids to read and write.

By Bunny is a smart and playful blend of literacy and animal facts that spark kids’ imagination and curiosity. We’re delighted to partner with Sphere Media once again on this imaginative and engaging series, and proud to support a project that originated in Canada and celebrates Canadian creativity. In today’s global market, developing homegrown IP is no small feat — and By Bunny does it with heart, humour, and curiosity.

-Kirsten Hurd (Commissioning Editor, TVOkids)

Judith Beauchemin, executive vice-president, operations, who oversees Sphere Media’s Kids and Family division, said:

Kids’ shows shape the minds that will one day shape our world — and By Bunny takes this responsibility very seriously. But what he doesn’t do is take himself too seriously: he puts the fun into facts. By Bunny aims to inspire curiosity and wonder, along with a desire for learning and we’re sure Canada’s kids will agree when the show premieres on TVOkids.

A mother and her young son set out before sunrise — a common reality for Roma women who walked long distances to sell handmade goods to support their families. The poster symbolises resilience, labour and the bond between generations.

KaskoSan Roma Charity and the University of Salford have announced the UK premiere of Gelem, Gelem, the first animated film ever produced in Britain entirely in the Romani language.

The short film has been co-created with Roma women from Oldham, drawing directly from their real experiences of migration, motherhood, survival and identity, voiced by the women themselves in their community dialect.

Supported by The Ideas Fund / British Science Association, this premiere marks the culmination of an ambitious creative-research programme enabling traditional Roma families to engage in professional arts production for the very first time.

We come from very closed communities. Many of us had no education, no voice and no power to make decisions about our lives. In the UK, for the first time, we are being trained and supported to speak for ourselves — not having others speak about us. This animation carries our pain and our pride. It shows how far we have travelled — from isolation to possibility.

Countering silence with visibility

Roma culture and history remain largely absent from British cultural life, while Roma people are frequently misrepresented without being heard. This project offers a meaningful shift – from invisibility to self-representation.

This film has been shaped by women who have never before had space to speak publicly about their own lives. Animation allowed us to protect identities while revealing their experiences — in their own language. This is not a film about Roma women; it is a film by Roma women — and that distinction changes everything.

There are still some available (free) tickets to the premiere on 18th December, which you can buy here. Beyond the premiere, the film will be entering the 2026 animation festival circuit, and will soon after be expected to make its online premiere later next year (watch this space for news of that).

Roma remain one of Europe’s most misunderstood communities. This premiere shows that our language, history and creativity belong in British cultural life — and that our communities can lead their own stories.

Disney x F1 Sphere (Blind Pig)

Blind Pig has created a new animated piece for Disney and F1’s “Fuel the Magic” campaign, shown on the Las Vegas Sphere during the Grand Prix weekend. As one of the studios invited to contribute sponsor content for the event, they brought their character and motion expertise to a unique and highly visible canvas.

The ambitious collaboration saw The Sphere transform into a dynamic celebration of speed, storytelling, and Disney magic. Visible to both trackside spectators and viewers worldwide, the project represents one of the most technically demanding undertakings in Blind Pig’s history.

It required the studio to craft animations that were specifically optimised for the wraparound format, while capturing the energy of Formula 1 and Disney’s signature enchantment.

Disney x F1 Sphere (Blind Pig)

This really was a new frontier for our animation team. The Sphere isn’t just a screen – it’s an immersive canvas that demands a complete rethink of our creative approach. We wanted to create something that honoured both the precision and speed of Formula 1 and the timeless magic of Disney. The result is a visual experience that feels alive, dynamic, and is definitely hard to miss. Seeing it come to life, right there on the Strip as the cars raced past, was an amazing moment for the whole team.

-Ric Comline, Executive Creative Director at Blind Pig

The Blind Pig team tailored the animation to fit the Sphere’s unusual geometry and display requirements, working closely with the Sphere team to ensure it landed as intended.

Our team worked around the clock, conducting extensive technical testing to ensure flawless playback. It’s a testament to our team’s dedication and expertise that we delivered something this complex in a short space of time.

-Josephine Gallagher, Executive Producer on the project

Disney x F1 Sphere (Blind Pig)

We wanted the animation to reflect both the energy of F1 and Disney’s storytelling. We pushed our 3D and motion design tools to create race-paced sequences, and adapted our workflow to the Sphere’s unique format. It was a challenging brief and a rewarding one.

-Sean Cooper, 3D Creative Director at Blind Pig

The Disney x Formula 1 partnership, which extends through the 2027 season, represents a bold fusion of world-class motorsport and Disney’s renowned creative excellence. The Sphere activation at Las Vegas serves as the campaign’s centerpiece, introducing fans worldwide to an unprecedented blend of entertainment and racing spectacle.

The Blind Pig animation was featured prominently throughout the race weekend, visible on the Sphere and integrated into broadcast coverage reaching millions of viewers globally.

The Academy Award and Annie Award-winning animated short film, “WAR IS OVER! Inspired By The Music of John & Yoko,” is now available to watch for free exclusively on the Official John Lennon Channel on YouTube, marking its global streaming debut.

The film is set in an alternate WWI reality where, as a senseless war rages on, two soldiers on opposite sides of the conflict play a game of chess. A heroic carrier pigeon delivers the soldiers’ chess moves over the battlefield as the fighting escalates, meanwhile neither soldier knows his opponent as the game and the war builds to its climatic final move. Whoever wins the game, the film powerfully illustrates that one thing is for certain: there are no winners in war.

“WAR IS OVER!” was co-written by Sean Ono Lennon and 20-year Pixar alumni – writer, director, and animator – Dave Mullins (“Up,” “Soul,” “Incredibles 2,” “Cars 2”), directed by Mullins, produced by Brad Booker (“Iron Giant,” “The Book of Life,” “Rumble”), and executive produced by Sean Ono Lennon and Yoko Ono Lennon, with a score composed by 15-time Oscar®-nominee, Thomas Newman.

“WAR IS OVER!” is a co-production of Lenono Music and ElectroLeague with animation produced by Peter Jackson’s Wētā FX using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.

Being able to share this film freely with a global audience for the first time feels very meaningful to me. My parents always believed that art, even in its simplest form, could help change the world and move us toward love and compassion. The message of peace at the heart of this film feels more vital than ever. I’m very grateful to YouTube for partnering with us to make the film accessible to everyone. It feels especially fitting to release it now, as the holidays begin, as ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ has always been a reminder of hope and humanity at this time of year. Making “WAR IS OVER!” available to all truly honors that ethos: our shared belief in John & Yoko’s timeless anthem, “War is over if you want it!”

Magic Light Pictures have created three charming new idents exclusively for BBC One and BBC iPlayer commissioned especially for this festive season.

The idents feature much-loved characters from the magical adaptations of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s picture books that have become the heart of the BBC’s Christmas offer.

This year’s animated film, The Scarecrow’s Wedding is celebrated with an ident starring lead characters Harry O’Hay and Betty O’Barley who receive a Christmas visit from Santa. The two other idents feature Zog, Pearl and Gadabout from Zog and the Flying Doctors and Witch from Room on the Broom; while the third features The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child with Stick Man and his family.

Magic Light Pictures

The idents will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer following Strictly Come Dancing on Sunday 30th November and will appear throughout the Christmas period.

The idents are created by Magic Light Pictures with animation by Triggerfish Animation studios.

Kate Phillips, BBC’s Chief Content Officer, said:

Magic Light have done the BBC proud and created three unforgettable idents that beautifully capture the festive spirit. Featuring a selection of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s most popular characters, I hope they will spread some extra joy and togetherness into homes across the UK.

Martin Pope, Joint CEO, Magic Light Pictures said:

It’s a real joy to see our much-loved characters returning to the BBC this Christmas. These new idents capture the heart of what makes the stories so special – imagination, warmth and wonder – and they also celebrate BBC iPlayer as the home of Gruffalo and Friends, where families can enjoy the entire wonderful collection of specials together.

This year’s animated Christmas special will be The Scarecrows’ Wedding, an enchanting story about two devoted scarecrows, Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay, who are planning a wedding to remember. When Harry insists on leaving the farm to collect one last thing for their big day, a smooth-talking scarecrow named Reginald Rake swoops in with plans of his own. Chaos ensues, and soon Betty’s in danger and everything’s at risk. Can Harry get back in time and save the day? Full of heart, humour and adventure, this is the joyful tale about loyalty, love and learning that the most important thing isn’t a grand gesture – it’s simply being together.

The half-hour animated special features an all-star voice cast with returning favourite Rob Brydon (Gavin and Stacey, The Trip) voicing Reginald Rake, Jessie Buckley (Wicked Little Letters, Wild Rose) as Betty O’Barley, Domhnall Gleeson (About Time, The Paper) as Harry O’Hay, all led by Sophie Okonedo (Slow Horses, Hotel Rwanda) as the Narrator.

The Scarecrows’ Wedding is directed by Samantha Cutler and Jeroen Jaspaert, adapted by Steven Bloomer from the book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, and produced by Barney Goodland and Michael Rose of Magic Light Pictures. Animation services by Red Star with assets and animation support by Triggerfish Animation.

The Gruffalo first enchanted BBC audiences on Christmas Day 2009. Since then, Magic Light Pictures and the BBC have brought to life thirteen award-winning animated specials based on the beloved books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler: The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child, Room on the Broom, Stick Man, The Highway Rat, Zog, The Snail and the Whale, Zog and the Flying Doctors, Superworm, The Smeds and The Smoos, Tabby McTat, Tiddler and this year’s The Scarecrows’ Wedding. Nollaí (TG4/BBC Northern Ireland/S4C)

TG4, BBC Northern Ireland and S4C are proud to announce Nollaí, their milestone first co-commissioned animated Christmas movie, created through a vibrant tri-nation co-production supported by Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund (ILBF), Screen Fund and Coimisiún na Meán.

This landmark festive special will premiere on 14 December, broadcasting in Irish on TG4 and Cúla4, on BBC Two Northern Ireland and on BBC iPlayer, and in Welsh on S4C.

Produced by Taunt Studios, the film invites viewers into a magical, heart-warming adventure led by Nollaig – or Nollaí as he’s lovingly known, an ordinary deer with an extraordinary secret.

About the Animation

Nollaig (or Nollaí for short) is just a regular, run-of-the-mill deer. A little tall for a deer, right enough, but he’s always been told he’s big boned. He’s been living the life since he was on the farm with his human family; best friend and sister, Sadhbh, and Daid. We first meet Nollaí on his birthday – or rather, the day that the family celebrates finding him. He came into Daid and Sadhbh’s lives one wintry night ten years ago, when they found him in the stone circle on the mountain. With none of his kin in sight, they take him in and he becomes part of the family. Years pass; Nollaí contends with his giant size in a human world but otherwise loves the community he lives in. Then, one day, everything is flipped on its head as he accidentally stumbles across a surprise that reveals he is quite possibly the last living Megaloceros giganteus (aka the extinct giant deer) in existence!

This discovery triggers adventure, with Nollaí and Sadhbh embarking on a quest back to the stone cairn in search of his origins. Along the way they bump into Stoca, a slightly chaotic Christmas-loving bat who is more than happy to join them on their journey. Together they arrive at the stone circle and discover a portal to another world – the realm of the giant deer! Nollaí passes through and meets a friendly giant deer who welcomes him home. But before he can find out more, the portal starts to close. Nollaí can stay in the land of the giant deer – the place he has been longing to find – but that means waiting a year before he can see his human family again. Sadhbh and Stoca, who are waiting on the other side, lose hope for his return but at the last minute Nollaí tears through the portal and reunites with them. He might not be able to explore the new found realm today, but he knows he can come back, when he’s ready.

Nollaí (TG4/BBC Northern Ireland/S4C)

Máire Uí Choisdealbha, Commissioning Editor, TG4:

We are absolutely delighted to commission TG4’s first-ever animated Christmas special, a truly exciting international co-production with our wonderful partners. This collaboration brings together an extraordinary blend of creative talent and cultural storytelling from Ireland and Wales, resulting in a festive film we believe will enchant families for years to come. It’s a milestone for TG4 and a celebration of the shared cultural imagination that unites our broadcasters. We can’t wait for audiences to experience the magic.

Karen Kirby, Commissioning Executive for BBC Northern Ireland:

This is the first collaboration of its kind for BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Gaeilge and we’re delighted to join with our broadcast and funding partners to bring this beautifully animated Christmas story to our audiences on BBC iPlayer and on BBC NI television. Nollaí is a delightful tale of love and belonging, a universal story which can be told in multiple languages and is brilliantly brought to life through the incredible acting talents of the cast, the animation team and musicians. I hope it will be a film that all generations can enjoy together over the Christmas period.

Sioned Geraint, S4C’s Content Commissioner – Children and Learners:

I’m delighted that S4C has been a part of Nollaí or Nolig in Welsh. This is a beautiful and endearing animated film which will resonate with so many of our viewers and be a highlight of our festive schedule for Children and families for years to come. It’s been great working with our Celtic friends again and build on the ever growing relationship between TG4 and S4C, and being able to launch this film in Irish and Welsh on the same day on both channels is perfect.

Rónán Ó Domhnaill, Media Development Commissioner at Coimisiún na Meán:

We are delighted to support the production of Nollaí through our Sound & Vision Funding Scheme which is all about supporting the creation of new, innovative Irish language content that will be enjoyed by audiences young and old.

Áine Walsh, Chief Language & Cultural Officer and Head of Irish Language Broadcast Fund at Northern Ireland Screen:

In our twentieth anniversary year, the Irish Language Broadcast Fund is proud to support Nollaí, the first ever Irish language animated Christmas special made in the North. It showcases the ambition and talent of our local creative teams, who brought skill and collaboration to every stage of the project. This festive story, steeped in Irish folklore, will delight young audiences and offer the whole family a shared Christmas experience in Irish. We’re thrilled it will be seen on BBC NI, TG4, Cúla4 and S4C, highlighting the strength of high-quality content being created locally for families across Ireland and beyond.

Tom Getty, Taunt Studios / Aisling McElroy, Taunt Studios:

All of us at TAUNT have had such a wonderful time creating our little film Nollaí. As a bunch of Christmas lovers, it was a dream come true to be able to spend the last year bringing this to life. None of this would have been possible without the support of BBC NI, TG4 and S4C, as well as our funders ILBF, Northern Ireland Screen and Coimisiún na Meán. We hope you all like it as much as we do.

Nollaí (TG4/BBC Northern Ireland/S4C)

Tom Getty, Director – Nollaí, Taunt Studios:

Nollaí first came into existence when our producer and writer at the time Grace Loughrey came to us with an idea for a Christmas short, about a young Irish Elk going on a journey of self-discovery. As huge fans of all things Christmas, we immediately loved it and worked together to brainstorm where we could go with the project. Fast forward a few weeks and we had a first draft of the script written by Grace and the ball really started rolling.

Taunt Studios were inspired by classic Christmas films, such as The Snowman, and wanted to bring some of that feel into a modern-day film. They created the animation using various different 3D softwares, and used ‘Unreal Engine 5’ to render the film. The decision to use Unreal, a real-time rendering game engine, allowed them to be at the forefront of the technological advancements in animation, and gain the benefits of that approach, allowing us to render the film much quicker and work more collaboratively on the production.

Taunt Studios worked with Dublin-based Little Moon Animation, who covered a wide range of pre-production tasks, notably the storyboarding, the majority of the character design, and additional world-building elements such as designing and building several of the 3D environments.

Stan & Gran (Banijay Kids & Family)

Banijay Kids & Family, a global leader in children’s entertainment, behind hit shows such as Totally Spies! and Mr Bean: The Animated Series, today announces a new partnership for Stan & Gran. Co-produced by Tiger Aspect Kids & Family (part of Banijay Kids & Family), Jollywise, and Xentrix Studios, the brand is set to collaborate with the RSPB for a year-long initiative which aims to inspire young children to explore and protect the natural world.

Stan & Gran launched on 5’s Milkshake! on 10th November 2025 and will air on Nick Jr. UK from 2026. It follows the mystery-busting adventures of Stan Breakwater, a curious and excitable young nature lover, and his fun-loving, dynamic Gran, as they investigate the strange goings-on in the fictional British coastal village of Porthole. Blending humour and intrigue with factual entertainment, Stan & Gran highlights themes of discovery, exploration and nature.

Both the RSPB and Stan & Gran’s propositions foster curiosity, environmental awareness, and scientific thinking in children. Wild Times, the RSPB’s nature magazine, aimed at RSPB members under eight, is jam-packed with fascinating wildlife facts and fun nature-related activities, puzzles and crafts. Beginning in December 2025, it will feature a colouring-in activity and introduce the show and its characters. From the March/April 2026 edition, a Stan & Gran comic will feature in the next six editions of the magazine. The partnership will be presented in the RSPB Notes on Nature newsletter and supported through the RSPB website to ensure strong visibility.

Jon Mason, Creator and Executive Producer of Stan & Gran says:

I have been a member of the RSPB since I was a young boy, so when I started to develop the show, I met with them very early on. Nature is at the very heart of Stan & Gran, with every episode designed to spark curiosity and wonder in the natural world – these principles are foundational to what the RSPB believes in, so it’s a perfect match. Both Stan & Gran and the RSPB want to inspire the next generation of nature lovers, through fun and adventure. Partnering with the RSPB feels like a full circle moment for me!

The RSPB adds:

Our partnership with Stan & Gran is a perfect match for Wild Times readers – RSPB members under eight. It’s vital that we pass our love, curiosity and knowledge of nature on to the younger generations. Stan & Gran carries this message at its heart.

Banijay Kids & Family’s collective of first-class producers and talent is behind some of the biggest kids brands in the world. As brand builders and experts at amplifying IP, it delivers creative and impactful 360 brand strategies for its shows.
