Quirino Lab, the new training program promoted by the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards, will take place from November 19 to 22 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. Geared to animation executive producers, this advanced seminar combines intensive professional development with a strategic vision of the sector, and seeks to boost individual careers and promote a qualitative leap in animation production in the region. Quirino Lab is an initiative of the Quirino Awards together with the Tenerife Council, through Tenerife Tourism and the Tenerife Film Commission.

“In the world of animation, executive producers are the engines that drive creativity and bring projects from paper to screen. However, in a sector in constant technological and market transformation, these professionals need to continuously update their skills and strategies in order to lead changes in the industry. Quirino Lab was created in response to this reality, offering an intensive program that provides a stimulating environment for the exchange of advanced knowledge as well as for collective reflection on innovation in the sector and new business strategies,” said Quirino Awards director Silvina Cornillón during the Lab’s launch at this year’s edition of the Annecy Animation Festival.

Focused on innovation from all perspectives, the program is divided into different modules that will be carried out during the first three days of the Lab under the mentorship of renowned experts in the international animation industry, specialists in different thematic areas of the sector, and professionals from other sectors with relevant expertise for executive production. Topics to be addressed include market trend analysis (including new exploitation formats and target audience redefinition), the use of emerging technologies, and the application of AI to production. There will also be reflection on organizational methodologies, team management, IP development, and the financial development of production companies and animation studios, among other topics. Once the workshops are completed, a networking day with companies from Tenerife will take place, as well as other social events.

For the design of the content, structure, and work dynamics of Quirino Lab, the organizers included contributions and reflections gathered during the Futures Lab, an activity organized within the framework of the Quirino Awards in collaboration with the Ortega-Marañón Foundation, which sought to identify the challenges and opportunities faced by the animation sector. The opinions gathered in a survey of industry professionals were also taken into account in structuring the program.

The program will also incorporate a special Futures Lab session focusing on executive production in animation. The conclusions, proposals and visions shared during the Quirino Lab sessions will form a strategic guide to strengthening one of the industry’s most important pillars.

Registration for Quirino Lab will be open from July 8 to August 5 at 11:59 p.m. (Mexico Time) for active animation executive producers. Candidates must be residents or nationals from one of the 23 countries in the Ibero-American region, in addition to having produced at least one series or one feature film, or three animated short films. Professionals with proven a background in executive production in relevant commissioned work, service, or other animated content may also apply. The Lab’s quota is limited to 20 people and paid places are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, provided they meet the requirements and submit all required documentation in a timely manner.

Registration for the Lab costs 1,200 euros and includes seminar activities and meals. Accommodation and transport are not included. The rules are available here.

The launch of Quirino Lab sees Tenerife reaffirm its commitment to developing the island’s animation industry. In 2024, the animation sector generated 19 million euros in Tenerife, accounting for 32% of total investment in the island’s audiovisual industry. The island has also hosted the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards every year since their inception in 2018.

YAY UK offers a platform for young animators to showcase their talent and gain exposure to leading professionals in the UK animation industry. The competition welcomes short animated films in 2D, 3D, or stop-motion, providing a unique opportunity for aspiring artists to receive feedback and recognition.

YAY UK is pleased to announce its partnerships for this year with Manchester Animation Festival, the UK’s biggest animation event, and HUE, the innovative supplier of animation products and creative, educational resources, as sponsors and supporters. Their generous contribution will enhance the experience for all participants and provide even greater opportunities for the winners across all age categories. Winning films will be announced and premiered at Manchester Animation Festival in early November.

Ruth Barrett, Head of Animation at HUE said of the partnership:

At HUE, we’re passionate about sparking creativity in young minds through HUE Animation Studio and HUE Clay. That’s why we’re so excited to support the YAY Awards, a fantastic celebration of the rising stars of animation and the power of imaginative storytelling.

This significant development allows us to support young adults who are pursuing animation studies or are in the early stages of their careers. We believe this will provide a crucial stepping stone for this demographic, alongside continuing to champion the fantastic talent within the younger age groups.

At a special awards ceremony during Manchester Animation Festival, winners in each age category will be presented with prestigious trophies, have the opportunity to meet expert judges, and receive invitations to private tours of Aardman Animations, Blue Zoo and Wildchild animation studios.

In 2025, the LINOLEUM Contemporary Animation and Media Art Festival will be held offline on 1-5 October at UNIT.City in Kyiv.

HUMAN RITES is the theme of the 12th edition, and we are starting to accept films for the competition programs.

“War is the father of all things,” said Heraclitus, believing conflict to be the source of growth and change. In life, struggle creates both order and destruction.

Birth, death, power, and survival become rites that define humanity, but they also fuel the very wars that shape our history.

“Human Rites” reflects how chaos and war give rise to something new. The play on “human rights” reminds us of our aspirations for peace and justice, while “human rites” exposes the struggle and violence that persist. Peace is only a fleeting moment of rest between battles, while struggle remains the essence of human existence.

The visual concept will be created by an award-winning Ukrainian animation director, Anastasiia Falileieva (I Died in Irpin).

Authors can submit their works to the International Competition or the Commissioned Films Competition. Films made in any animation technique, including works combining animation with acting and documentaries, are eligible. The animated part should be at least 40% of the film and not exceed the running time of 20 minutes. The films must be produced after January 1, 2024.

For British-produced films, please note that LINOLEUM is a BAFTA Qualifying Festival.

The program of the 12th edition will also include Ukrainian competition and retrospective, experimental films and video art, animation for and by kids, lectures and master classes, as well as diverse networking events.

Films are accepted via the FilmFreeway festival platform.

The call is open till 1st May 2025.

The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF)‘s Pitch THIS! application process is now open for Canadian creators to submit their original animated series concept. Presented in partnership with Ottawa-based animation studio Mercury Filmworks as a part of the OIAF’s The Animation Conference (TAC), Pitch THIS! provides a unique opportunity for new voices to refine their craft and connect with a large audience of their peers, studio executives and potential financiers. Creators have until 11:59 pm EDT on June 17, 2024, to submit their pitch for consideration.

So much incredible work has been showcased over the years at Pitch THIS! We greatly appreciate Mercury Filmworks and the event’s other partners’ continued support in helping TAC develop fresh talent and getting their work on screen, especially as we celebrate 20 years of our industry conference.

-Kelly Neall (Managing Director, OIAF)

A pillar of TAC, Pitch THIS! has helped launch careers and put animated series in the spotlight, including past participants Beccs Champagne (Ghost Stories), Mansa Chintoh and Malachi Ellis (Project Blackout), and Mike Geiger (Winston Steinberger and Sir Dudley Ding Dong). The opportunity is open exclusively to Canadian projects spanning all target demographics, from preschool to adult series. Creators from underserved and marginalized communities are strongly encouraged to apply, in particular BIPOC, people living with disabilities, women, gender non-conforming, and 2SLGBTQIA+ members of the animation community.

At Mercury Filmworks, we are driven by a passion for storytelling and more specifically stories told through the medium of animation. Our passion and commitment to telling stories with integrity and bold creative points of view have taken us far beyond even what we thought was possible. It is this desire that brings us back for the fourth consecutive year in partnership with the OIAF to be part of the Pitch THIS! event for 2024. Over the last few years, we have seen the quality of projects and the passion for storytelling go from strength to strength. We are excited to again pair up an amazing group of industry mentors with Canada’s future storytellers. Our belief is that together as a community we can reach higher and go further to create opportunities for Canadian storytellers to be seen on the global stage.

-Heath Kenny (Chief Content Officer, Mercury Filmworks)

A rare chance for up-and-coming creators, this year’s Pitch THIS! winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize courtesy of Mercury Filmworks, an annual Toon Boom Harmony licence and Harmony Fundamentals on-demand videos from The Animation Study, $1,000 in legal services courtesy of Edwards Creative Law, and two TAC Animapasses to OIAF 2025. As of 5:00 pm EDT on May 7, interested applicants can submit their proposals through the Pitch THIS! application form. A maximum of two submissions per creator will be accepted. It is strongly recommended that applicants review the pitch requirements on the OIAF website before submitting their application.

If selected as one of the 10 semi-finalists, creators will be paired with an established industry mentor to fine-tune their pitch in preparation for the Pitch THIS! semi-finals on September 25, 2024, at TAC’s new venue the National Arts Centre. From the 10 projects, judges will select two pitches to go head-to-head against one another in the finals on the TAC mainstage.
