Produced for the National Film Board of Canada, the film uses Landreth&#8217;s trademark uncanny, self-dubbed &#8220;Psychorealism&#8221; approach to CG animation, established in prior films such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/spine\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Spine<\/em><\/a> and the Oscar-Winning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/ryan\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Ryan<\/em><\/a> (an animated documentary based on Landreth&#8217;s interactions with fellow filmmaker <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ryan_Larkin\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Larkin<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ryan\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nbkBjZKBLHQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Subconscious Password<\/em> tells of a potentially awkward encounter at a party where Charles (played by Landreth in pixilation) struggles to remember the name of his acquaintance John (played by <em>Courage, the Cowardly Dog<\/em> creator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stretchfilms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John R. Dilworth<\/a>). We follow Charles&#8217;s internal struggle as his subconscious plays out the dilemma as though it were an episode of the gameshow <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Password_%28game_show%29\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Password<\/em><\/a>. Interspersed throughout the film are all manner of different animation techniques and ingeniously recycled footage as Charles calls upon key figures and influences from popular culture and his own life to help him remember.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bc8G7qVVSZY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Amongst its accolades, <em>Subconscious Password<\/em> won the main short film Cristal at Annecy 2013 and will be screening at this year&#8217;s Bristol Encounters Short Film Festival as part of their <a href=\"http:\/\/encounters-festival.org.uk\/news\/events\/ani-1-sands-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">Competition<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/encounters-festival.org.uk\/news\/events\/animation-highlights-making-mind\/\" target=\"_blank\">Animation Highlights<\/a> screenings. As an educator he has lectured and tutored at AUB Bournemouth, University of the West of England, University of Gloucestershire and UAL Central Saint Martins. Alongside his work in animation production he is an active writer and researcher on the industry through such avenues as the leading UK animation resource Skwigly, for which he is Editor in Chief, and his books 'Independent Animation: Developing, Producing and Distributing Your Animated Films' (2016, second edition published April 2023) and 'Intimate Animation' (2025, co-written with Dr. Laura-Beth Cowley). As an educator he has lectured and tutored at AUB Bournemouth, University of the West of England, University of Gloucestershire and UAL Central Saint Martins.
