{"id":24164,"date":"2016-01-11T10:35:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T10:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/?p=24164"},"modified":"2017-03-05T22:42:01","modified_gmt":"2017-03-05T22:42:01","slug":"don-bluth-and-gary-goldman-part-three-working-in-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/don-bluth-and-gary-goldman-part-three-working-in-ireland\/","title":{"rendered":"Don Bluth And Gary Goldman Part Three \u2013 Working in Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Along their long careers the work produced by\u00a0Don Bluth and Gary Goldman has had an affect on many sectors of the animation industry.\u00a0It&#8217;s well known that the pair&#8217;s departure from Disney and their own feature film success ultimately contributed to Disney having to step up their game in order to stay relevant and keep up with Bluth and Goldman&#8217;s competition, something the mammoth studio had never really\u00a0encountered before.\u00a0Today we discuss another change which sent the studio\u00a0overseas to Ireland to give them the opportunity to create some of their best ever work including<em> The Land Before Time<\/em> and leave a lasting legacy on the Irish animation landscape and animation education, which is still felt to this day as the Irish animation industry\u00a0thrives.<\/p>\n<p>The move to Ireland was essential for their studio\u00a0to secure funding to continue making films.\u00a0As the animation funding landscape has changed drastically the pair are now looking for funds for a pitch presentation for <em>Dragon&#8217;s Lair: The Movie<\/em> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/dragon-s-lair-returns#\/\">Indiegogo<\/a>\u00a0which is in its last week of funding.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dragon&#039;s Lair: The Movie - Video Update #2\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1XqJHtZWrdU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In part three of our interview we discuss those halcyon years in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you tell us about working in Ireland?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gary Goldman &#8211; It was a wonderful experience, we took 87 of our artists and technicians, management people, their families and dogs and cats to Ireland &#8211;\u00a0it was like moving an army!<\/p>\n<p>Don Bluth \u2013 The reason we moved to Ireland was because <em>An American Tail<\/em>\u00a0was about to be released and Universal wanted to see if the movie was a success\u00a0before they would pay us to make another movie. So the only way we could stay alive as a studio, was to move to Ireland where the IDA (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.idaireland.com\">Industrial Development Agency<\/a>) came forward and offered their support and let us stay in business.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24194\" style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24194\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BluthPomeroyGoldman-380x214.jpg\" alt=\"(L-R) Don Bluth, John Polmeroy, Gary Goldman\" width=\"380\" height=\"214\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(L-R) Don Bluth, John Pomeroy, Gary Goldman<\/p><\/div>\n<p>GG \u2013 Funny story, at the end of <em>The Secret of N.I.M.H<\/em> John Pomeroy\u2019s wife went to see a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phrenology\">phrenologist<\/a>, and the phrenologist\u00a0said \u201cYou\u2019re an artist\u201d to which she replied \u201cyes I am\u201d, the phrenologist asked if she was on some sort of \u201ccrusade\u201d with her artist friends then\u00a0suggested that \u201ca silver-haired gentleman will take you all away to a faraway island and the company\u00a0will become very successful\u201d. A few months later a silver-haired gentleman was introduced to us, he looked like a banker, with a pinstripe suit and wing tipped shoes. He came in to meet us, sat down with us and didn\u2019t say more than ten words. We showed him part of <em>The Secret of NIMH<\/em>, showed him around the studio and in the end he smiled, shook our hands and said that he\u2019d be back. He was our business consultant for the next two years and eventually took us to Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 His name was Sullivan, Morris Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p>GG \u2013 A very Irish name!<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 When we got to Ireland he had made all of the political moves to get us there so we put his name on the studio which became Sullivan Bluth. He just opened so many doors for us. The IDA paid us for each person we trained, so we were able to go to Ireland, keep our crew working and be able to do our second film for Universal which was <em>The Land Before Time.<\/em>\u00a0Had we not moved to Ireland <em>The Land Before Time<\/em> would not have been made.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_24191\" style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24191\" class=\"wp-image-24191 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Publicity-Sullivan-Bluth-Studios-on-the-Liffey-380x300.jpg\" alt=\"Publicity Sullivan Bluth Studios on the Liffey\" width=\"380\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sullivan Bluth Studios, Dublin, Ireland<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>My personal favourite so thank goodness for Mr. Sullivan and maybe the phrenologist as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>DB \u2013 I had just remodelled my house and felt really good about it when Morris said \u201cGuys, we&#8217;re going to Ireland!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>GG \u2013 We balked and he reassured us it would be easy \u201cDon\u2019t worry&#8221;, he said &#8220;You\u2019ll get on a plane, have a couple of drinks and you\u2019ll be there\u201d (they laugh).<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 We arrived in Ireland to the worst weather they&#8217;d had in 100 years, it was freezing cold and it was a nightime.<\/p>\n<p>GG \u2013 Our management team in Ireland had set up a dinner when we arrived at the airport, but no sooner had we sat down all the power went out, we wondered what kind of omen that was!<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 A lot of people had brought their pets across which had to spend 6 months in quarantine which was awfully sad for them only being able to visit once a week so there was a lot of sacrifice made by the crew to go over there.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Worth it though?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Both \u2013 Yes!<\/p>\n<p>GG \u2013 It was wonderful, the Irish are great people, I try to go over once every other Christmas to see the ex employees, many of them came back over to Arizona with us to work on <em>Anastasia<\/em>, <em>Bartok the Magnificent<\/em> and <em>Titan AE<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 It worked in the opposite direction, we brought Irish people back to Arizona with us like\u00a0we had brought American people over to Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>GG \u2013 When we were shut down here in Arizona many of those folks went to work at Dreamworks, Pixar and Disney. It was a unique experience. When we went to Ireland there were people who were good artists and didn\u2019t know anything about feature animation because there wasn&#8217;t an industry out there. There was Jimmy Murakami who used to make commercials there when I first met him he introduced us to people who would work with us in future.<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 Ireland is a very musical place, they get together in the pubs and sing and dance. What was encouraging about Ireland as opposed to some other part of the world, was a spirit that came through the end of the pencil. We always looked for employees that had that lyrical spirit inside of them. They sing, they dance, they party, they have a good time and usually that comes out on the paper.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_24192\" style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24192\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24192\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Sullivan-Bluth-Moon-Image-380x495.jpg\" alt=\"The Sullivan Bluth Studio, Dublin, Ireland\" width=\"380\" height=\"495\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sullivan Bluth Studios, Dublin, Ireland<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>No wonder the Irish animation industry\u00a0is still thriving to this day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GG \u2013 We set up a course\u00a0with Sheridan College in Canada, in 1988 we were a little bit behind getting <em>All Dogs Go To Heaven<\/em> done so I called up the president of the college and asked her if she would allow a dozen students to come over to Ireland and if they were given credit toward\u00a0their degree for the experience of working with us. We brought twelve over, and four or five stayed. One of them became a directing animator within 14 months. A very talented young man but he&#8217;d only had 6 months of school training before then \u2013 he never did graduate from Sheridan college. They probably should have given him a honorary degree in the end.<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 Also at Ballyfermot College we set up a course there that was equal to Sheridan\u00a0to train people to be animators so people would gain a qualification from Sheridan at Ballyfermot, which was great.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A similar model to what Disney did with Cal Arts?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GG \u2013 When I graduated it was called Chouinard. When I graduated from community college\u00a0in 1969 I wrote to Chouinard\u00a0and sent them my portfolio, they said they loved it but they were not accepting any new students. They moving to Valencia to become what is now known as Cal Arts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>I\u2019d be remis If I didn\u2019t ask about obvious comparisons\u00a0your work has led to, such as\u00a0<em>The Land Before Time<\/em> and\u00a0Disney&#8217;s <em>Dinosaur<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GG \u2013 Everyone says it is the same story, one of our directing animators\u00a0who worked on <em>The Land Before Time<\/em> also went to work on <em>Dinosaur<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 Who was that?<\/p>\n<p>GG &#8211; Ralph Zondag, the co-director.<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 Oh, he did his own dinosaur picture too didn&#8217;t he?<\/p>\n<p>GG \u2013 His brother went on to direct a\u00a0dinosaur picture in London called <em>We\u2019re Back<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>How did your own dinosaur story come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_24193\" style=\"width: 257px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24193\" class=\"wp-image-24193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Land_before_time-380x561.jpg\" alt=\"Land_before_time\" width=\"247\" height=\"365\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Land Before Time (1988)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>GG \u2013 When we were 8 months into <em>An American Tail<\/em> Steven (Speilberg) invited us over for lunch to discuss our second picture of the two picture contract and he told us the story that he and George Lucas had long wanted to tell. It was an animated dinosaur picture that\u00a0was basically and ethnic story, five different ethnicities or dinosaurs who had lost their families and had to work together to find their parents.<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 George wanted to make that with animatronics.<\/p>\n<p>GG \u2013 Or CG.<\/p>\n<p>DB \u2013 So the two were not in total agreement when we went into that meeting. That was the project that we had to go to Ireland to do. Steven was adamant that it be animated, because he loves animation. George was kind of stand offish for a long while with that picture.
