{"id":32403,"date":"2017-11-28T12:54:03","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T12:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/?p=32403"},"modified":"2017-11-28T12:54:03","modified_gmt":"2017-11-28T12:54:03","slug":"jorge-gutierrez-son-jaguar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/jorge-gutierrez-son-jaguar\/","title":{"rendered":"Q&#038;A with Google Spotlight Stories director Jorge Guti\u00e9rrez (&#8220;Son of Jaguar&#8221;)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.super-macho.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jorge <\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.super-macho.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guti\u00e9rrez<\/a>&#8216;s enthusiasm for Mexican culture gave us the authentic and entertaining feature film <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/book-life-review\/\"><strong>The Book of Life (2014) <\/strong><\/a><em><strong>as well as TV projects including <\/strong><\/em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.super-macho.com\/animation\/7_el-macho.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Macho<\/a> <\/strong><em><strong>and the Annie\/Emmy award-winning Nickelodeon TV series <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.super-macho.com\/animation\/2_el-tigre-the-adventures-of-manny-rivera.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera<\/strong><em><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/a> <em><strong>This year he has delved into the ever-expanding world of 360 storytelling, joining forces with <a href=\"https:\/\/atap.google.com\/spotlight-stories\/\">Google Spotlight Stories<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reelfx.com\/son-of-jaguar\">Reel FX<\/a> (reuniting members of the team behind <\/strong><\/em><strong>The Book of Life<\/strong><em><strong> including Art Director Paul Sullivan and Character Designer Sandra Equihua) to create the immersive short film <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.google.android.spotlightstories\"><strong>Son of Ja<\/strong><strong>guar<\/strong><\/a><em><strong>, a tale of a once-mighty masked wrestler facing &#8220;his legacy, his family, and what it means to be a part of something bigger than himself&#8221;.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>Initially released last month on Pixel2 and Steam, the VR film has this week expanded its platforms to include Viveport, IOS, Android and YouTube 360.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong> Skwigly met with Jorge during Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/google-spotlight-stories-annecy-2017\/\">special preview presentation<\/a> of Son of Jaguar earlier this year at the 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annecy.org\/\">Annecy International Festival of Animated Film<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Google Spotlight Stories: Son of Jaguar Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W1xcHHhyp2g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved with Google Spotlight Stories?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I met Karen Dufilho, she had originally said I should do one of these and I wasn\u2019t sure, I was kind of on the fence. I really liked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/lightbox-glen-keane\/\">Glen Keane\u2019s <em>Duet<\/em><\/a>, but I felt <em>This is Glen Keane, what could us mere mortal humans do compared to that? <\/em> And then I saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/patrick-osborne-pearl\/\">Patrick Osborne\u2019s <em>Pearl<\/em><\/a> and I cried like a baby so I said \u201cI\u2019ll do one, I\u2019d be a coward if I didn\u2019t try to give it a shot\u201d. And I love making people laugh and cry, it\u2019s one of my favourite things, and this seemed to be a good way to do that.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What can you tell us about the narrative of the film?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the short you\u2019re a ghost on the Day of the Dead and you\u2019re coming to visit your family and you find out your son is basically a loser! He lost his leg in the wrestling ring, he\u2019s falling apart, his whole family depends on him, and then you watch him fight and he\u2019s terrible because he doesn\u2019t believe in himself. So just as he\u2019s about to die, you as the viewer and the ghost will appear to him.<br \/>\nThe theme of the short was me feeling like having a kid, having a family took me out of the ring and didn\u2019t allow me to take risks anymore, because people depended on me. What it turns out was they actually became my strength.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_32404\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/SOJ_art2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32404\" class=\" wp-image-32404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/SOJ_art2-785x448.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Son of Jaguar<\/em> concept art by Paul Sullivan (Image courtesy of Google Spotlight Stories)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>So in terms of going from feature film to VR what was the most difficult area to get your head around?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Well, the biggest thing is filmmakers and storytellers we\u2019re so used to cutting and framing, those are our sharpest swords. So I had to go into battle without those and I felt like they\u2019d chopped off my arms! So it was very difficult to give away those things that are what we use to communicate, so it was embracing this new film language and what I sort of came to terms with was we\u2019re making virtual \u2018plays\u2019. You go to a play, actors come out, they start acting, the theatre lights guide you. The audience can look wherever they want but as time passes the performance doesn\u2019t stop \u2013 you go to the bathroom it keeps going, right? So that\u2019s how I approached it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Were you given any guidelines to work within?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Y\u2019know, it was like landing at Normandy at the beginning of <em>Saving Private Ryan<\/em> &#8211; they said \u201cGood luck!\u201d and I just ran in. <strong><em>I<\/em><\/strong>t was pretty chaotic, but they\u2019re used to this. They gave me all the support in the world. Unfortunately with these things they\u2019re so new that we\u2019re still figuring out the software, we\u2019re not even in beta, we\u2019re in alpha, so it\u2019s pretty crazy!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_32406\" style=\"width: 609px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/SOJ_BTS6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32406\" class=\" wp-image-32406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skwigly.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/SOJ_BTS6-785x589.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jorge Guti\u00e9rrez and team (Image courtesy of Google Spotlight Stories)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>As a filmmaker and artist yourself, where do you think VR is heading \u2013 both as part of animation and its own art form?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Well I think what\u2019s happening is very unique in that cinema is over 100 years old, and VR is at the early stages, and I think the real VR audience is being born right now. So I think people will look back at this stuff as the early, early stages of it. But I think what\u2019s happening now is there are movies, there are television shows, there are video games, and now VR is its own medium. It\u2019s going to be very interesting to see 1. What type of stories people like me want to tell for the medium, and secondly \u2013 and this is the big one \u2013 what does the <em>audience<\/em> want? What are they really into?
